FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
NEW GRANT HAS CONNECTION
TO 11-10-02'S ROOTS
In the late 1990’s, before it began funding grants and scholarships, The 11-10-02 Foundation’s primary focus was the mentoring program, The Brunch Bunch. Each week, a group meal took place – typically, it was a reservation for 10 to 20 people. It was a way to use food as ‘common ground’ to bring people of different generations and backgrounds together. In recent months, 11-10-02’s Board approved two donations to a nonprofit in Maine that provides food to local students with financial need. With our funding, that organization purchased a couple hundred copies of a popular kids’ cookbook (that also teaches youth about kitchen skills and healthy meals in addition to providing recipes) and is now giving those cookbooks to some of the students they already assist. In this way, we will be supporting kids’ efforts to learn and read while also highlighting a field (Food) and an industry (Culinary) that played central roles to our start. Perhaps, one of the students will be inspired to pursue a food-related career some day in the future!
A BUSY FEW MONTHS OF GRANT GIVING AROUND THE COUNTRY
Those two grants were not the only ones given out by The 11-10-02 Foundation over the past few months. In fact, since our last newsletter, the foundation has funded grants for nonprofit organizations that assist students throughout all different parts of the country. In addition to those donations to support the work of a nonprofit in Maine, the foundation’s recent grants — which have ranged in size from $250 to $2,100 — include donations to organizations in Oregon, Alaska, South Carolina, and Wyoming as well as multiple donations to a group in Rhode Island and multiple donations to a group in Montana. Depending on the grant, those donations are being used by those nonprofits to purchase books that teach kids about mathematics in sports, and books that help students prepare for tests and job interviews. These donations have also funded the purchase of computers, school supplies and microscopes. We have now funded a grant or scholarship in all 50 states and Washington DC – and at least 3 grants &/or scholarships in over 40 of them.
